Salmon fishing begins at Laxa in Kjos on June 5th and continues until September 15th.The best weeks are typically from late June until mid-August.

The river is divided into five, two rod, beats. There is also a free beat, to offer a choice to any angler at all times. Catches are very

high, usually between 1200 - 2400 salmons per season. Throughout most of the peak of the season, the experienced fisherman can expect to catch between two and five salmon per per day.

The best season ever was in 1988 when more than 3800 salmon where taken. This still stands as a national record.

Fishermen are more likely to encounter heavy water early and late in the season, and at these times may wish to bring heavier tackle. In the mid-summer months Iceland offers unique opportunities for fishing with light tackle in crystal clear water. Fly rods are usually single-handed, 9 to10 feet long, using lines from weights AFTMS 5-9. The floating line is most commonly used, although in high water a sink tip or slow sinking line may be favored. A particular attraction is fishing with a rifle surface fly in clear water. This method, known as rifle hitching, is very productive at Laxa in Kjos, and is especially exciting as the take of the fly happens in full view.
